Conclusion
So ended the Minchin Trip, the Linwood Rovers main hike of 1933. The result was that the seven of us came back from what we unanimously acknowledge as the best climbing and hiking holiday experienced to date, with the firm belief that although from 4-6 is an ideal mountaineering party, yet a Rover party with the absolute maximum of 8 is not too large provided there is plenty of time. Our aim is not only to go for a difficult hike, so that we can say we have accomplished something, but to have a real holiday with plenty of real rover spirit and plenty of enjoyment.
The 1933 trip satisfied this ideal for the size of the party and its members did not hamper the speed; we had 14 days to do a 10 day trip and therefore had plenty of time to recuperate and have an easy time; and finally, non were “crook” except for blisters and sore hips which was unavoidable, all being fit as fiddles. It may also be added, in fact it should be put in capital letters, the man-size meals added to our weights and increased our enjoyment.
Just before concluding, I would like to say a word or two about Reg Hyde, our leader. I may not be very expressive, it being not usual for us to pat each other on the back, but I do not think it would be our of place to mention that Reg’s capacity as a leader cannot be estimated too highly. On this trip for instance, having the responsibilities of a leader, yet he attempted things, though not dangerous, that were thrilling, which we were looking for, when he could easily have had us go a much longer and more tiresome way; he, due to his being stronger than the rest of us, as is exemplified in the Minchin Gorge, could go ahead, reconnoiter and returning assist us with the end of the rope.
